EHIC stands for European Health Insurance Card. They are free and can only be used within the EU. The card will entitle you to free or discounted medical treatment as if you were a resident of that country. In some cases, if you use your EHIC card, certain insurers may waive the excess on your travel insurance.
Where do I Apply?
You will need a separate card for each member of your family. Check that your card has not expired before travelling as they are valid for 5 years. You can apply from the official government website at www.nhs.uk/ehic, or if you prefer you can call the NHS on 0300 330 1350 and order from here.
Do I still need travel insurance?
You will still need to purchase travel insurance as the EHIC does not replace or provide an alternative. It will not cover any private medical healthcare or costs such as, being flown back to the UK, mountain rescue in ski resorts, or lost or stolen property. Please be aware the EHIC card is not valid on cruises.
